Cheeseburger in Paradox

Traditionally we think of foods like cream, butter and eggs as the French paradox ingredients…The ones the French seems to be able to use regularly without getting into trouble. Why? Probably because not only do these guys eat different foods than we do, they eat differently. I’m talking portion control, not nibbling between meals and cooking for themselves rather than relying on fast food fixes.

The truth is any food can fit into this “French Paradox…even something as American as the cheeseburger. To prove it, I’m throwing in this recipe that’s just a little bit more indulgent than my norm. With this true quarter pounder you’ll be surprised to find how satisfied you can be even without the French fries.

  • 1 pound ground sirloin
  • 1/2 cup California Black Ripe Olives
  • 1/2 cup sautéed chopped onions
  • 2 teaspoons Chopped thyme
  • 1/2 cup Grated gruyere cheese
  • 4 whole wheat buns, grilled
  • Dijon mustard, as desired
In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, California Ripe Olives, onions and thyme. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Form into 4 patties and cook on a grill over medium high heat for 3-5 minutes. Flip burger and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes. Top with gruyere cheese, cover and cook until cheese is melted and burgers are cooked to desired temperature. Serve on grilled buns and garnish with Dijon mustard. Serves 4.
