Celebrating Olive Month

Have you hung your California Ripe Olive garland and sent out those greeting cards? National Olive Month is upon us! Better get started. Since this isn’t exactly the most conventional holiday season, here are our top ten ideas to establish some of your own family traditions to celebrate our favorite little black fruit.

10. Tap into one new California Ripe Olive Recipe each week. We’ve got over 500 stored in our database. Now is the perfect time to find some new favs.

9. Begin each meal with a bowl. Set the table with a bowl of California Ripe Olives. Leave them plain on weeknights and jazz them up on the weekends with one of our marinade recipes. With only 7 calories per large olive, this is a good way to fill up and keep those calories down.

8. Sign up for school snack duty. Send the kids in with a few cans of California Ripe Olives (and a can opener). Girl scouts, chess club and the soccer team also love these little morsels that they can nibble straight from their fingers.

7. Make edible jewelry. Have a group of kids over and string up some glamorous black ripe jewelry. Cherry tomatoes and blanched carrot circles can punctuate your designs with a little color. When the fashion show is over, everyone can eat their own creations. Fruit Loops have been playing the part for years.

6. Marinate with friends. You’ve had cookie parties at Christmas time. Now it’s time for an “olive-off”. Invite friends to bring their favorite marinated California Ripe Olives to your home. Set them out on your dining room table and sample as you mingle, then vote on your favorites. Winner goes home with bragging rights. The whole party will leave with a few new recipe ideas including this one.

5. Have an afterschool stuff-a-thon. Roast a few garlic cloves, chop some grilled peppers and mix some goat cheese with fresh herbs. Fill a few extra large California Ripe Olives with each. Eat as a snack or package them nicely to take to school for an unexpected teacher treat.

4. Teach your friends to make tapenade. Have a couple of gals over for a glass of wine and a simple cooking lesson. Use your favorite basic tapenade recipe for starters, then show them how to create a few great treats including Tapenade Pizza Minis and Tapenade Roasted Chicken using one simple staple.

3. Start a virtual family recipe swap. Log on and get some back and forth going by asking your friends for their tried and true family recipes made with California Ripe Olives. Be sure to send recipes around to all respondents.

2. Monogram your pizzas. Make personalized pizzas with the neighborhood kids. Use California Ripe Olives to spell out their initials. Once baked, it takes the guesswork out of the serving game.

1. Google search olive penguins. You may be inspired to create a kooky olive creature of your own.
